A thick/choked/dense blanket of smoke obscured/hung over/shrouded the bay/waters/shores. It arose/originated/emerged from a fire/blaze/inferno on the distant/nearby/southern shore/banks/landmass, sending gray/black/brownish plumes more info into the air/sky/heavens. The smell was pervasive/lingered
